Alternatives Identified for Further Study:

As required by the Council on Environmental Quality implementing regulations (40 CFR 1502.2[e]), a full range of reasonable alternatives will be evaluated in the EIS. These alternatives will include a No Action and development of in-basin and out-of-basin water sources. The inclusion of a No Action Alternative is required by NEPA and is the basis against which all other alternatives are compared.

The EIS will evaluate potential environmental impacts of specific alternatives together with engineering and socioeconomic considerations. A preferred alternative has not been identified at this time.

The following links are listed in no particular order, and show the alternatives identified for evaluation in the EIS. Last updated December 2007.

GDU Import Pipeline Alternative:

This alternative proposes a combination of the Red River, other North Dakota in-basin water, and imported Missouri River water to meet future water demands.

Red River Basin Alternative:

This alternative would draw on a combination of the Red River, other North Dakota water sources, and Minnesota groundwater to meet future water demands.

GDU Import to Sheyenne River *Preferred Alternative

This is the preferred alternative, and would use a combination of the Red River, other North Dakota in-basin sources, and Missouri River water to meet future water demands.

Missouri River to Red River Valley Import Alternative:

This alternative would use a combination of the Red River, other North Dakota in-basin water sources, and imported Missouri River water to meet future water demands.

ND In-Basin Alternative:

This alternative would primarily use the Red River and other North Dakota water sources to meet future water demands.

No Action Alternative:

This alternative is the future without the Red River Valley Water Supply Project.
